Fall Weekend Fashion

The evenings here in the Bay Area have been getting chilly, and it has gotten me excited for the onset of Fall. Mike and I recently realized we hadn't been going on as many adventures as we used to, and made a commitment to make our weekends count.

Feeling inspired by our upcoming adventures and the crisp Fall weather that will soon be upon us, I put together three new Fall looks that would be perfect for our outings.

I can almost smell the pumpkin cupcakes baking now!

Old Navy Sale

I went to the mall today to return a cardigan at Old Navy, and lo and behold they were having a massive Back to School sale. I kind of have a love/hate relationship with Old Navy - sometimes I want everything in the store, and other times I don't like a single piece of clothing they have. I was definitely digging more than I wasn't on this trip, for sure. I ended up scoring this cute blouse and skirt for really good sale prices, and I also picked up a plain white tee, too. I can always use those, as they tend to get faded or dingy over the course of the year. The tees were only $10 each!

Here is the set with the blouse and skirt I got, styled for both now and for the fall. I will wear this for our back to school staff meeting and for casual fridays.

I heart Asos!

Over the past week, a store named Asos has popped up in several of the blogs I read. I had never heard of this store before, and all of a sudden it seemed to be everywhere! I decided to take a look at their website, and they are the cutest store! They have an amazing mix of professional, sexy, and free-spirited clothing on their site.

Here are some of my favorites showing off their unique mix of clothing:

Vero Moda Gypsy Border Print Dress Warehouse Colourblock Belted Dress
ASOS Pleated Bandeau Dress with Curved Neckline ASOS Shift Dress with BUTTERFLY PRINT
ASOS Midi Fit & Flare Dress with Basqued Waist ASOS Pencil Dress with Tulip Skirt

Hybrid Wrap Bust V Neck Dress River Island Flower Trimmed Peasant Dress
Twist & Tango Dark Floral Dress

As you can see, they offer quite a mix of styles. Most of the dresses seem to be between $50 - $80, although some can go into the hundreds.

Just what I needed, another dress store to tempt me!! :)

Dresses I Love

So many adorable dresses are available now that I would love to buy! They could all be worn to work, too. I think the patchwork circle one is my favorite, but it is a little pricey. I'll have to wait on that one to make sure I really, really want it.

New Teacher Outfits

Although the new school year is still a month away, I have been slowly getting ready. I've purchased some things for my new classroom, planned a few units of study, and updated my classroom website. I've also planned a few new pieces to add to my teacher wardrobe!

Here are some new things I've added into the mix for the new school year.

I love this maxi dress from Downeast Basics. It doesn't look like too much in the picture, but on it is so adorable. I also love that I can just pull it on and have my whole outfit ready.

Back to School '11

I know not all schools allow their teachers to wear open toed shoes, but here in sunny California, all of the schools I have worked for have allowed it. I think a pair of ballet flats would look cute, too, or even cowboy boots in the cooler months.

This dress from Modcloth is so me. I really like the silhouette of the dress, and this coral color is so pretty. One of my goals for this year is to wear more color - with this dress, I would definitely be doing that!

For the pretty lines of this dress I would like to keep things simple. I'm not much of an accessories girl anyway. If I could actually get my hair to work in that style, I would totally do it. That would be a small miracle!

For right now, that is it. I've been losing weight and a whole bunch of outfits I previously purchased that never fit are now fitting. I feel like I doubled my wardrobe for free! I also have my annual back-to-school shopping trip coming up, so I'm sure I'll pick up a few pieces then. Every year, I invite all of my coworkers out for shopping and lunch before school starts. It is always a blast, and each year I've been able to get some pieces that I truly wear all year long. I'll be sure to update after that outing!

Summer Outfit Shopping

Hi friends! I did a little summer shopping this weekend to stock up on some easy breazy summer outfits that I can wear to both work and on my upcoming vacation to Aruba. Below are the looks I put together with the pieces I bought.

Mike picked out this adorable yellow sundress for me. I can wear it with a little cardigan and sandals to work, or by itself with flip flops in Aruba.

I loved the bright cherry color of this skirt. I can think of so many ways to wear this to work or on the weekends. Here is one way to wear it for work:

For Aruba, I can ditch the jacket and go with a white tank top and flip flops instead.

I purchased both the dress and the skirt at Ann Taylor Loft, where the dress was on sale for 30% off. I got the skirt at 15% off using my trusty teacher discount.

I love spring and summer - I can wear dresses and skirts every day! Now I just need to get a darn pedicure so I can start wearing my open-toed shoes!

Modest Bathing Suits

Could it really be that time of year already? Is bathing suit season really this close?!

As much as I hate wearing a bathing suit, I had to give in and buy one this weekend, because Mike just booked our summer vacation ... to Aruba!! I am so very excited to being going to a tropical island for two weeks, and, even though I wish it weren't the case, tropical islands go hand in hand with bathing suits.

When thinking of buying a bathing suit, I am so glad that there are so many stores out there that carry really cute swimsuits that don't require showing a lot of skin. After all, no one wants to see my pasty skin flashing all over the place. Here are some of my favorites.

All of these swimsuits are from their new (as if you couldn't tell from the pics) summer line. Tops are about $40 and bottoms are around $30.

These cute tankinis are all available on Down East's website. Tops are about $40 and bottoms are around $30.

In addition to loving Modcloth's retro inspired clothes, they also have adorable retro inspired bathing suits. So cute!

Popina is a boutique in Oregon that sells retro-inspired swimsuits. I love that they carry Jantzen suits - a great mix of vintage and modern.

So with all of these cute options, which suit did I pick?

A Teacher's Wardrobe

As a young teacher, I sometimes have a hard time finding outfits that are appropriate for the classroom, but that are still fun and have my quirky style. I also want things that are affordable and that I could potentially wear outside of school or to other events.

When I first started teaching, I scoured the web looking for suggestions on where to get cute "teacher clothes", and really didn't find anything helpful. So here is my teacher clothes post! Even for my readers who aren't teachers, these sites have adorable clothes at pretty good prices, and some of these companies may be new to you. Happy shopping!

Oh, and just for the record, I am all for stores like Target, H&M, and Gap. I just figured we all knew about those stores already and would like stores that were new and a little different. Enjoy! :)

This site is amazing for one-of-a-kind, retro-inspired clothes that are purposely cut modestly. This means they are not low cut, cover your upper arms, and have longer hemlines. These modest touches do not take away one bit from how adorable their dresses are.

Here are two I just bought for spring:

Bellissima Bacciami!

The site has many collections with the sweetest dresses ever. I love their bold colors and fun details. The dresses typically run between $70 - $80, and are well constructed.

This is another modest clothing company that has a wide variety of basics, as their name implies. Skirts, dresses, tops, and pants are all available here. I like their skirts the best, and they also have some cute t-shirts that have some pretty embellishments to dress them up a bit for work with khakis or under a blazer.

Cute, simple tops like these are items you can find at Down East Basics. The best part? These tops are less than $25 each, and you can often find amazing sales.

Now this site you have to be careful on, because their dresses can be quite short. However, depending on how dressy or casual your school is, you can definitely wear some of the shorter dresses over leggings or over skinny black pants. They also have cute blouses and sweaters, and a whole section on dresses that are "longer lengths." I try to get a hemline that is at least 35'' long for school, or I plan on wearing something underneath.

Quiet Campus Stroll Dress in Yellow Tumbled Stones Dress Too Much Fun Dress in MelonEnchanting Entomologist Dress

Their variety of dresses is really large, and as you can see from the pics above, they can run from retro to more polished, to quite whimsical. Dresses typically range from $40 - $80.

Ruche is another site very similar to Modcloth that carries inexpensive, cute clothes with a little bit of vintage style. Again, watch the hemline on their dresses. I find that I like their outerwear and tops the best.

mint 'n chips dippin' dots top by Nick & Molead me straight to you striped blazer

Ruche's prices for tops tend to range from $30 - $80.

Boden is a European company that has traditional clothes, but that are made with unique, colorful fabrics that really give them a twist. One downside? I find them a bit expensive. I'm not sure they are all that more expensive than department stores, though. And, I will say that their quality is incredible. They also have great sales!

Essential Short Sleeve Scoop Neck Breezy Jersey Tee Appliqué Jersey Top Flared Cotton Trousers

If you are looking for clothes that are a little more traditional, or you just need some basics like good work pants, cardigans, or simple button-downs, these are my favorite go-to stores. The best part? They all give a teacher discount!

This is my favorite store to buy work pants and cardigans. Their quality is great, and their pieces last for years. The 15% teacher discount doesn't hurt, either. They even have a whole teacher section on their website with styling ideas for the classroom.

Go to:

teachers.anntaylorloft.com for information on how to sign up for their discount and to take a peek at their teacher lookbook.

Other stores that give teacher discounts:

New York & Company
The Limited

Usually you just have to have your Teacher's Association card with you to the discount.

To end, are these not the cutest teacher shoes ever?
